Exploring Number

Here are some ways we explore number at the beginning of the year in grade one. I use different stories and activities to support this learning.

For the number one we do the song, This Old Man. After our explorations of the song for literacy activities we use this to lead into a discussion about what things come in one. I provide the children with a 11x17 piece of paper and talk about how to create a web. The children then go on a search and draw and/or label all the things they find one of in our classroom, in our school. (ie school, clock, door, principal, etc.)

For the number two we use the poem, One, Two Buckle My Shoe. The children bring things to school that come in pairs. We also read the story, Two by Two and then create our own class book. The book could be patterned after the story or a collection of pages that show two shoes, two mittens, etc.
There are a number of pieces of folk literature that are fun to use for the number three: Three Little Kittens, Three Little Pigs, Three Bears. For this exploration the children are provided with opportunities to role play the stories.
For the number four we look for items in magazines and group them into fours as they are glued onto a sheet.
Children love the story Five Little Monkeys and as we read it a number of time we role play the actions with it. It is fun to follow up with counting by fives. This is a good opportunity to do a handprint graph to see if their are more left-handed or right-handed people in the class.
