Exploring
Numerals
Here
are some ways we explore number at the beginning of the year in
grade one. I use about 6 bins and rotate groups of children
through each one so that they have an opportunity to explore all
the different mediums.
1. The children use lemon juice on a
q-tip to draw the numerals.
2. At this center the children have place
mats to use with play doh. I have the parents provide fresh play
doh every month. The children make the numerals using the play
doh.
3. At this center children use pieces of
string which they glue down on manila tag to form the numerals.
A 11x17 piece of paper is divided into 4 pieces and the numbers
drawn on in permanent pen by the teacher or a parent is
provided.
4. Boxes with sand, rice, or salt are
provided and the students trace the numbers with their finger in
the medium provide. Finger paint is fun too, but a bit more work
for clean up.
5. Whole body movement allows the children
to try and make the numerals using their hands or their whole
body.
6. A number is designated and the children
use junk collections (Styrofoam chips, beans, toothpicks, etc.)
to form the numeral on a large sheet of manila tag.
7. Use Bingo Dabbers
to form the numerals on heavier paper.
8. Children use Geo
Boards and elastics to form the numerals.
