100 Day Party

On the first day of school, our kindergarten class began to record each day that we had been in school, keeping a running total. To celebrate being in school for 100 days, we had a little party.

Each child brought 100 things in to school. We went into the gym where we had lots of room. Each child started laying their things out "starting on the black line."

Some items took a lot longer than others to place in a row.

Friends came to help out.

When everyone had finished, we used the floor tiles to measure the length of each 100 item line. We celebrated the unique qualities of each line - for example, the line that has the shiniest jewels, the most connecting pieces, the crunchiest flavor, and so on.

Learning:

  • The children began to internalize that 100 things is a lot - way more than they usually have to work with.

  • Children learned that 100 things can look different by changing the items.
