Mrs. Swinnerton's Daily Math Routines

The child describes, orally, and compares quantities from 0 to 10, using number words in daily experiences.

  • Counts the number of objects in a set (0 to 10)
    • Count the number of girls present and the number of boys present
    • Classroom voting- count the number of people who want each choice
    • In the sorting tray, place one manipulative in the compartment labeled one, two in the compartment labeled two etc…
    • Participate in a number of games, which provides the child with a set of objects (for example- 8 stars) The children must count the number in the set, then place the correct symbol on top (for example- a rocket with the number 8 written on it)
  • Builds and compares a set of objects, and, describes the relationships among them using the terms: more than, less than, the same as, and equal to (no written symbols)
    • Compare the number of girls present to the number of boys present
    • Count the number of people at each center
    • After sorting objects, compare which set has more (We do this at snack time, center time, etc…)
  • Orders up to 2 sets of like objects based on the number of objects in each set
  • Explores the representation of single-digit numerals, using a calculator or a computer to represent numerals on a screen

The child demonstrates awareness of addition and subtraction.

  • Represents the processes of addition and subtraction through role playing and the use of manipulatives
    • Using theme related manipulatives, practice adding more to a set. How many do we have now? What if we take some away?

The child identifies and creates patterns arising from daily experiences.

  • Sorts objects, using a single attribute
    • Identify why I have grouped children in a particular way (girls, boys/ brown hair, black hair, blond hair/ clothing colors)
    • Sort the snack by shape, texture, what it is, etc…
    • Sorts manipulatives into the sorting tray, using color, size, identity etc…
    • Sorts dinosaurs by plant eater or meat eater
    • Sorts dinosaurs by whether it walks on two legs or four legs
  • Recognizes and reproduces a pattern, using actions and manipulatives
    • Identify the pattern on the calendar- using manipulatives, create that pattern on the floor
    • Identify the pattern I have made in grouping children- Can they make that pattern as well?
  • Extends and creates a pattern, using actions and manipulatives
    • Select a group of approximately 6 students to line up at the door. Have them arrange themselves in a pattern. Send more children to join them and see if they can extend the pattern.
  • Describes, orally, a pattern
    • Describe the pattern on the classroom calendar
    • Identify the pattern I am creating when I call children to a line-up (boy girl, boy girl/ red shirt blue shirt red shirt blue shirt)

The child demonstrates awareness of measurement

  • classifies and describes attributes of objects (ex long, short)
  • arranges objects in order of size, by length or height
  • covers a surface with a variety of objects
  • uses the words full, empty, less and more, to talk about volume and capacity
  • uses the words heavier or lighter, to talk about the mass of two objects
  • uses the terms long time or short time to talk about the duration of events
  • uses words like hot, hotter, cold, colder, warm, warmer, cool, cooler to talk about temperature
    • Chart the temperature daily on a model of a thermometer. Discuss whether the line has moved up or down since yesterday. Does that mean it is warmer? Etc…
  • exchanges play money for objects in a play store

The child sorts, classifies, and builds real world objects

  • Identifies, sorts, and classifies 3-D objects in the environment
    • Discuss how a Christmas Tree is like an upside down cone- Done while using ice cream cones for Kindercooking
    • Discuss how the earth and the moon are like ball
  • Describes, and discussed orally, objects, using such words as big, little, round, like a box, like a can
    • Discuss the size of dinosaurs using concepts like big and little
    • Discuss the different sizes of the plants, using big and little
    • Identify the plants as being round
  • Builds 3-D objects

The child describes, orally, the position of 3-D objects

  • Describes the relative position of 3-D objects, using such words as over, under, beside, between, inside, outside
    • Practice Nursery Rhymes, and act them out using props
      • Humpty Dumpty sat ON a wall
      • Hey Diddle Diddle- The Cow Jumped OVER the moon
      • Sing a Song of Sixpence- 4 and 20 Blackbirds, baked IN a pie

The child collects and organizes, with assistance, data based on first hand information

  • Collects, with assistance, first hand information
    • With each food group, discuss which choices the students like best
  • Constructs, with assistance, a concrete/object graph, using 1:1 correspondence
    • Using each child’s choice from above, place the items in the correct spot.
  • Compares data in two categories, using such words as more, less, the same
    • Using the above, stop frequently during the building of the graph to compare- how many items are in this column? How about this one? Which one has more? Less?
