Daily Activities

Children need many opportunities to work with money and numbers. We use a Number of the Day system for repeated practice. After the 100th day we began to draw a new number each day (I made the numbers from 1 - 100 on the computer, then cut them up and put them in a baggie). Each day a student would draw a new number, we would count to that number by 1's, 2's, 5's and 10's. Then the student would glue the number on the appropriate place in our blank hundreds chart. The student would then decide how they might make that number with money, using a cookie sheet, magnetic money (I made by gluing magnets to the back of real coins). As a class we would record how many different ways that number could look in coins. The child then revealed the way they chose. This challenge of guessing what the person is thinking is a wonderful motivator. For added practice, as a class we then brainstorm ways to add and subtract to the number of the day. See the pictures below for specific examples.
| Here is where we glue our number of the day onto the hundreds chart. | |
| Students suggest ways we could make 22 cents, and how we can add and subtract to 22. | |
| We put our number of the day in our tens and ones chart. |
