Easter Math Center

In my kindergarten class I love to create theme based centers that are age appropriate, meaningful and hands-on.  Easter is a meaningful holiday for the children- they enjoy bunnies, baskets and eggs.

To create the math center, I bought egg garland and mini baskets from Wal-Mart.  I cut the string in between the garland and all of the eggs became individual eggs perfect for sorting, counting, patterning, graphing and adding.  I then wrote down numbers 0-9 on paper and taped them on the baskets. Lastly I set out the baskets and Easter eggs at a center with an Easter bunny.

To introduce the children to the center I showed them some possibilities for one to one correspondence, sorting, graphing and I asked them for other ideas to use the eggs.
They came up with: Counting all the pink eggs and yellow eggs and then adding them together.  Counting all of the different colors and seeing which one has the most and least.  Creating an egg pattern and seeing how long all of the eggs were lined up.  Did you know, they were longer than 2 children laying down?

To extend this center I have also included different sizes of plastic Easter eggs to see them find different ways of sorting.
It is fun to watch the children explore with the materials and find new and exciting ways to use the eggs mathematically.

Here is a sample of how a Easter Egg math center
can be set up.
