Measurement
Mrs. Swinnerton's
Kindergarten Class
The child demonstrates awareness of measurement
Classifies and describes attributes of objects (ex long, short)
- Describe the attributes of a dinosaur. Which one has a long tail? Which
one has a short tail? Which dinosaur is taller? Which dinosaur is shorter?
Arranges objects in order of size, by length or height
- Order a series of dinosaurs based on height.
|

In this photo, the students are
arranging the dinosaurs by height. They are comparing each dinosaur to a
picture of a man standing beside it to assist in determining the heights of
the dinosaurs. |
Covers a surface with a variety of objects
- To determine the relative size of a dinosaur footprint, we covered it with
students shoes and traced them.
|

We found that 36 feet from our class
equaled 1 dinosaur foot. |
Uses the words full, empty, less and more, to talk about volume and capacity
- At the water or sand centres, practice filling up the buckets. Which one
is full? Empty? Which bucket holds more sand? Which bucket holds less water?
Uses the words heavier or lighter, to talk about the mass of two objects
- Using the scale, put 9 dinosaurs on one side and 5 dinosaurs on the other.
Which side is heavier? Which side is lighter? What could you do to make both
sides weigh the same?
Uses the terms long time or short time to talk about the duration of events
- Discuss how long ago the dinosaurs lived.
Uses words like hot, hotter, cold, colder, warm, warmer, cool, cooler to talk
about temperature
Chart the temperature daily on a model of a thermometer. Discuss whether
the line has moved up or down since yesterday. Does that mean it is warmer?
Etc…
Exchanges play money for objects in a play store
- Set up the house centre as a store. Have the students identify how much
each thing should cost. What are they going to use for money? Have them design
the money.
- Before taking a trip on the Polar Express, the students must purchase a
train ticket. Knowing that the train ticket costs $150.00, have them design a
currency and exchange it for the ticket.
