Measurement - Mrs. Opyr

Non-standard measuring using a toboggan. Children were provided with a number of different manipulatives to measure with. These included: cube-a-links, pattern blocks, and paperclips. An extension to the activity could be that the children estimate how many manipulatives were used and then measure and count. The children recorded their data in their math journals.
This same idea was used with weigh scales where the children again used an assortment of materials to measure the mass of pumpkins at Halloween and potatoes for St. Patrick's Day. For these activities the children estimated first and then recorded the actual count in their journals.
