Throughout the year the grade ones in my class
practise number by estimating and counting an assortment of goodies that I
provide in a jar. First the children are required to estimate and I note these
on a chart and then we count to see the actual number. The numbers that are
closest and furthest away are also identified by circling, underlining or
crossing out. This is a good way to practise place value because when we count
the items are grouped into piles of tens and leftover ones to make the counting
easier. The grade two teacher extends this to place value in hundreds by using a
larger jar with puzzle pieces, cube links, etc.
For this I used Chocolate jack o'lanterns at
Halloween.
For this chart I used gold coins on St. Patrick's
Day.
Other ideas include candy hearts or cinnamon
hearts for Valentine's Day. For center activities I fill baby food jars with
bread tabs, beads, beans, little plastic bears, etc.
