Sample of Letter Sent Home to Parents About the Math Packs

Dear Parents,

The Earl Buxton Math Packs have been developed over the past few years with the hope that kindergarten parents will enjoy doing them with their child while exploring one or more of the many strands of the math curriculum: geometry, numeration, measurement, operations and properties, and data management.  The homework packs are meant to be completed in a family setting with lots of discussion and fun.  Many of the activities are open ended with no right or wrong answers.

Each Math Pack contains a story, an activity sheet, the student’s math Journal, and the material needed to complete the activities.  We are using stories, books and nursery rhymes as starting points to bring meaning into mathematics through the power of story.  We hope that each child will attempt two or three different math packs each month.

The Math Journal is an integral part of the Math Pack.  Please take the time to write down some observations and discoveries.  The Math Journal will not be evaluated but it will be read and hopefully it will provide us with some information about your child’s experiences with the activities.  Feedback is important for us in developing other Math Packs or in revising the current ones.  Please have your child return his/her Math Pack as soon as it is completed.  We request that the Math Pack be at your home no longer than one week, so that it can be used by other children.

If you have any questions, let us know.

The K Team
