Sharon's Vignette:  Counting and Number Writing

Calendar Counting and Number Writing

Early in the year, we count the numbers on the calendar each day, sweeping an arm right to left to follow from one row to the next.  We also try to write the number in the air after I model it on a white board or black board.  My regular reminder to the children is that all numerals start at the top.  Many children make reversals but I am more concerned at this point that I start to help those children who are writing numbers that start at the bottom and move upward.  I also want children to feel the number being written, so I use my finger like a pencil and print the numeral about a foot high onto the children's back's.
"That tickles!", says Rachelle.
"Do it again!", begs Robby.
We occasionally sit in a circle, and after I print a numeral on one child's back, that child then prints it on the back of the next until the number goes around the circle.
