Activities written by Sharon Hoekstra, Earl Buxton School and Marilyn Reid, former Math Consultant, EPSB

  • OBJECTIVES: Counting, ordinal numbers, calendar 'sense'
  • MATERIAL: Book: The April Rabbits (R)
  • Laminated April 2002 calendar with numbers on it (R)
  • Blank April calendar worksheet (R)
  • Crayons (R)
  • Math Journal (R)
  • A. Read the book with your child. Take the time to count the rabbits on each page.

    B. Discuss the enclosed completed April calendar (with numbers):

  • How many days are there in April?
  • Let's say the days of the week. How many days are there in one week?
  • What day is the first of April? What day is the second of April?
  • What number is the last day of April? What day of the week is the 30th of April?
  • What day do you think is your favourite day in April?
  • C. Using a pencil, complete the blank calendar for April by filling in the numbers in the boxes (dates). Either have your child do this or take turns with him/her. Some numbers are easy to print and other are harder. Ask you child which are the easiest and which are the hardest for him/her today.

Using the coloured crayons, mark the calendar using the following clues:

  • Put a red X on the first of April. What day is it?
  • Put a red X on the 2nd Monday of the month. What number is it?
  • Put a red X on every Monday in April. How many Mondays are there?
  • Put a blue circle on the first Sunday in the month. What number is it?
  • Put a blue circle on the last Sunday in April. What number is it?
  • Put a blue circle on every Sunday. How many Sundays are there?
  • Colour the whole box yellow for the second Saturday. What number is it?

  • Use yellow to colour the last Saturday. What number is it?Colour all the Saturdays yellow. How many are there?
  • (Continue to ask questions until each day of the month has a coloured mark. Make sure the same days have the same colour. eg., Tuesdays could be brown, Wednesdays, green, Thursdays, orange and Fridays, purple.
  • D. In your Math Journal, print today's date. eg., Today is _____________________ and copy the name of the book.

    E. EXTENSION: (Optional)

Using a two page spread in the Math Journal, draw a picture for the 30th day of April, if David could have seen the rabbits then.

note to teachers:  The instructions for this Math Pack need to be revised each year because the first (and second and last) day of April will change from Monday to Tuesday to any other day of the week.  Just reassign the colour for each day as needed and reprint the instruction sheet.
