Number Stories

with Mrs. Starko

We have been converting our number stories, rhymes and songs into number sentences.  The children were introduced to the signs + and -  about  4 weeks ago.  As we did a number story or rhyme I would ask them what sign would represent this story.  Is this a plus or minus story and what sign would you use?

From here we did the following song:
One little duck went out to play, down by the pond on a fine spring day,
Another one said, "that's fun to do."  He joined in and that made two.
Because, one plus one equals two.

Two little ducks went out to play down by the pond on a fine spring day,
Another duck said, "Hey, wait for me."  He joined in and that made three.
Because 2 + 1 = 3.
Three little ducks went out to play....
Another duck peeked round the old barn door.  She joined in and that made four.
Four little ducks went out to play...
Another duck saw them dip and dive, she joined in and that made 5.  Because
4 + 1 =5.

We write the number sentences on the board for this story.  I simply introduce them as they know what a sentence is this one is a special kind of sentence, a number sentence because it has numbers in it.

In the days and weeks that follow this lesson the children begin to come up to the board in pairs, and create number sentences for our other rhymes.

5 Little Monkeys has a monkey drawn around the board and inside go the sentences for his story:

5 - 1 = 4
4-1 =3
3 - 1 = 2  Etc.
We do the same for One Elephant Went Out to Play, Our Snowman Poem, 5 Little
Sparrows, 10 Fat Sausages, 10 Crunchy Carrots, 3 Crows Sat Upon a Wall and
all the others.

I have now begun to tell them stories of my own, usually dragon stories for the castle, or dinosaur stories for the dinosaurs about meeting friends and joining them or by being eaten etc.  These are then converted by the children into number sentences.  They are almost ready to make up their own stories for the others to convert.  They will then tell a story and write it down in number sentences.

To support the above work:

-Math beach scene magnetic board from Wintergreen with magnetic pieces, starfish, fish, children, balls, boats, etc,  numbers and signs.  The children can use these to create number sentences.

-math puzzles put together to form number sentences

-math balance with plastic numbers, hang one big number on one side, balance it with two addends on the other.  To help with this the people counters are out that sit on a black pole.  The children hang the large number on the one side and put that many people on the pole. They then divide the people into two groups any where they like.  They count the groups and hang those numbers up and it balances.  This way they see many ways to make seven or five, etc.

-clown with balloons on each side.  Put any two together and find the number sentence to go with that picture.

-mechanical number game by leap frog for number practice and guess the answer

-Winnie the Pooh Math games in Piglet's house they frost cupcakes on two trays count up each, then they are given the number sentence and they pick the correct sprinkles jar with the answer on it.
